Music Mind Games

Unit 1 Teacher Training Workshop at ISSI
June 14-23, 2012

The Music Mind Games Unit 1 Teacher Training Workshop at ISSI promises to be a comprehensive experience for teachers wanting to be trained in this highly successful and popular method to teach students music theory and how to apply it to reading music. Spread over ten days, instead of the usual five, the workshop will include 28 teacher training hours. Whereas most Unit 1 workshops contain just a few hours of student observation, this workshop includes 15 hours of observation time of Michiko teaching four student classes over six days. This will give teachers the opportunity to see many games in practice, learn how much can be accomplished in a short period of time and observe the joy with which students of all ages embrace learning with this method.

Teachers will learn creative ideas and more than 70 games to teach music theory and note reading using Music Mind Games. This hands-on workshop covers basic music theory concepts, focuses on information from the book Music Mind Games and includes Michiko’s many recent innovations. Topics include the musical alphabet, intervals, rhythm reading, Blue Jello, Blue Jello hand signs, rhythm math, melodic dictation, solfege, Curwen hand signs, the grand staff, alto and tenor clefs, musical symbols, tempos, beginning key signatures and beginning scale study. The games will be played using the Puppy Packet, Panda Combined and Puppy Plus materials. Games are from First Steps in the Music Mind Games curriculum with a few games from Second Steps.

Class size is small so participants have the opportunity to play together, ask questions and practice teaching other teachers in the group.
